Farmhouse detail: reclaimed wood art

Reclaimed wood truly is a precious commodity if you can find it. The texture of old wood is so rich and rustic that it adds a farmhouse feel to any home. We were lucky enough to have a handful of it left over from our loft bathroom remodel, from the part of the roof we removed to add the dormer. The 100-year-old original wood was truly a part of the heart and soul of this home, so we decided to reincorporate it as a piece of wall art in the living room.

Johnny evened out the wood pieces and laid them out in a row with three parallel backing boards on top of them, while I arranged the edges so that they were just randomly-placed enough to make the finished piece look interesting. Then Johnny affixed the backing boards to the wood, along with some wall hangers, and the artwork was done! We love the texture and character it adds to our dining area.

Next, with the remnants of the wood from our roof, Johnny and I laid out a heart as the perfect finishing touch for the walls of the bathroom that the wood originally came from.

Weeks after these projects were completed, Johnny was spending time with his sister at his childhood home when he texted me that he had found the motherlode of reclaimed wood. A neighbor had torn down an old fence, and he instantly saw a place for it on the Farmhouse walls.

The best part for me was that when Johnny posted a picture of the final piece of art and told where it came from, the neighbor whose dad originally built the fence many years ago sent the sweetest picture of herself as a little girl in front of the fence. It meant so much to have the full-circle story of the lifetime of the wood!
